The innerspring mattress is the firmest, most comfortable foundation for your baby’s bedding. The non-innerspring mattress provides a soft insulated layer of comfort which is suitable for babies.
The natural innerspring crib mattress employs traditional Bonnell style coils surrounded with quilted layers of organic cotton and pure wool that, with extra tufting, achieve a truly firm mattress to provide that perfect feel for a newborn baby.
The innerspring mattresses are the more traditional type mattresses.Inside that vinyl covering, nearly all crib mattresses today use polyurethane foam as internal filling. The three chemicals of concern are phosphorus used in the baby mattress cover, and arsenic and antimony added as preservatives and fire retardants. The industry aims to eliminate all sources of phosphorus, arsenic and antimony from their mattresses.

The concern about mattresses is related to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), also known as crib death. The theory is that some of the fire-retardant chemicals in the mattress react with naturally occuring mold (which gets a boost from moisture coming from baby).
One possible reason mattress manufacturers are required to use fire retardants is possibly government regulations.
RoyalPedic makes an excellent organic cotton queen or king-size mattress. This mattress has no fire-proofing and does require a doctor’s prescription before it can be sold.
By law, all full-size crib mattresses must be at least 27 1/4 inches by 51 5/8 inches and no more than six inches thick.
